Gymnasts as Ninjas PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kathy Tooman

Two skills a gymnast must develop: 1.  Awareness of the environment around them using all senses.

                                                           2.  Awareness of their body in the environment around them.

Eyes can be tought to judge distances, line up jumps, focus on a spot to allow a spin without a spill.  Ears can be tought to listen to music, block out or tune into comments, listen for foot fall. Is one leg landing louder than the other. Is the landing loud or soft.  Taste and smell can be used to recognize the salt and sweat of work well done.  Touch can be used to recognize tight or stiff muscles. All senses combined can be trained to turn one inward, to feel the music, anticipate the spin, to recognize fatigue or strain.  A successful gymnast must be able to turn inwards to be one with their environment.
